A LETTER JOURNEY

From the ancient forms of formal scripts to modern expression, and through the intimate narratives within art books, my work explores the transformative power of letters, and their ability to shape worlds and to unveil them.

Works

Historical explorations of Western calligraphy: from Roman capitals and Italics to Gothic forms, alongside expressive calligraphy and abstract experimentation. Here, the focus shifts toward pure form and the transformative potential of the written stroke, with occasional forays into Eastern calligraphy.

In this collection of drawn letters, the alphabet serves as a playground for exploration. Such work ranges from scripts that evolve into stabilized forms to purely illustrative pieces, where letters morph into organic compositions and visual stories.

A graphic designer by trade with a deep interest in book arts: the books are physical experiences for the written word.
These unique artist books are entirely handmade, blending calligraphy and illustration on textured, artisanal papers to create a multi-sensory narrative.

About

Drawing from a background in typography and graphic design, Francesca Luzzi turned to calligraphy to explore the full potential of letterforms. Her current practice spans formal scripts and expressive lettering, culminating in handcrafted artist books that blend various techniques and tactile materials.
